Total Number of Pokemon in 2025

As of early 2025, there are exactly 1,025 unique Pokemon in the Pokedex. However, this number only tells part of the story. When you include all the different forms and variations, the total becomes much larger.
There are 59 regional variants (like Alolan Raichu or Galarian Ponyta), 48 Mega Evolutions (such as Mega Charizard), and 32 Gigantamax forms. Adding all these special forms brings the total to an impressive 1,164 different Pokemon!
This number is expected to expand further with the release of Pokemon Legends ZA later in 2025, which will introduce even more creatures to catch and train.

Pokemon Generations Overview

The Pokemon franchise has spanned nine generations, each introducing new creatures, regions, and mechanics. Here’s a quick breakdown of how many Pokemon were added in each generation:

Generation 1 (151 Pokemon)

The generation that started it all in 1996 introduced iconic creatures like Pikachu, Charizard, and Mewtwo. These original 151 Pokemon set the foundation for the entire franchise and remain some of the most beloved creatures to this day. This generation introduced the classic Kanto region and established core game mechanics defining the series.

Generation 2 (100 Pokemon)

Gold, Silver, and Crystal brought us 100 new Pokemon in 1999, plus some big changes to the game mechanics. This gen introduced breeding, held items, and two new types: Dark and Steel. It also added the day/night cycle, which affected which Pokemon you could catch.
Remember trying to evolve into different Eevee evolutions, like Espeon or Umbreon? That was new here. The games let you revisit Kanto after beating the Elite Four, which was something no other Pokemon game has done since.

Generation 3 (135 Pokemon)

Generation 4 (107 Pokemon)

Gen 4 marked the series’ jump to the Nintendo DS with 107 new Pokemon. This generation is known for adding lots of evolutions to older Pokemon (like Electivire and Magmortar) and the physical/special split in the battle system. We also got online battling and trading for the first time:

Generation 6 (72 Pokemon)

Generation 7 (88 Pokemon)

Gen 7 took us to the tropical Alola region with 88 new Pokemon and regional variants, a brand new concept that gave old Pokemon new forms and types. Z-Moves replaced Mega Evolution as the big battle mechanic, and traditional gyms were replaced with Island Trials.

Generation 8 (96 Pokemon)

Sword and Shield (2019) and Legends: Arceus (2022) make up Gen 8, adding 96 Pokemon between them. Sword and Shield introduced Dynamax and Gigantamax forms, plus the Wild Area – the series’ first open-world zone. Legends: Arceus then went full open-world and took us to ancient Sinnoh (called Hisui), with new catching and battle mechanics. Notable additions:

Generation 9 (120 Pokemon)

Scarlet and Violet (2022) brought us into the current generation with 120 new Pokemon and the first truly open-world mainline games. The Terastal phenomenon lets Pokemon change their type mid-battle, and you can now explore the whole map with your legendary Pokemon (Koraidon or Miraidon) as a mount. The games also introduced Paradox Pokemon – ancient or future versions of Pokemon we know.

How Many Types of Pokemon Are There?

Let’s talk about Pokemon types – basically, the different elements or categories each Pokemon belongs to. As of 2025, there are 18 different types in total. Each type has its own strengths and weaknesses, kind of like a really complex game of rock-paper-scissors.
What makes types interesting is that many Pokemon have two types – Charizard being Fire/Flying, or Gyarados being Water/Flying. That said, here are all the Pokemon types right now:

Fairy type was actually added later, in Generation 6. It was brought in to balance out Dragon types, which were pretty powerful at the time.
